Yep, it was that famous fella you've never heard of, Peter Goldmark, who takes the prize as the inventor of the vinyl record you're familiar with today. Born in 1906, Goldmark ended up working at Columbia Records as an engineer and was the key developer of the 33 1/3 rpm LP record. In 1930, RCA Victor launched the first commercially-available vinyl long-playing record, marketed as “Program Transcription” discs. These revolutionary discs were designed for playback at 33⅓ rpm and pressed on a 12″ diameter flexible plastic disc.
